October 20, 2009— This fall, The New School, including Parsons The New School for Design, the Vera List Center for Art and Politics, and Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts, presents a wide range of programs in the fields of art and design. Highlights include Control|Print (Nov 6-Dec. 20), a collaborative exhibition with the Royal College of Art (RCA), London, exploring the intersection of art, craft, and technology, and Moving Pictures (Nov. 11), a symposium exploring how motion and animation have transformed the field of illustration, featuring presentations by artist Richard McGuire, artist Lauren Redniss, Slate music editor Jody Rosen, and author Joel Smith. Parsons will also present a series of programs focusing on architecture and public space, including Connect 4loor (Oct. 26), a lecture and presentation debuting the newest project of The Design Workshop, Parsons' signature design/build program, Flatpack City (Oct 29-Nov. 20), an exhibition exploring how architectural practices approach planning and building shelters for communities of need, and Detour (Dec. 3-Jan. 10), ann exhibition documenting notable architectural projects along Norwegian tourist routes, the results of a national infrastructure design competition. A number of notable artists, designers, writers, and critics will discuss their craft, including photographer Lorna Simpson (Oct. 27), New York Times senior art critic Roberta Smith (Nov. 5), author Roger Martin in conversation with Bruce Nussbaum (Nov. 12), and writer and critic Luc Sante (Nov. 17). As part of the School of Art, Media and Technology’s Visiting Artist Lecture Series, Parsons will present lectures by Amorphic Robot Works founder Chico MacMurtrie (Oct. 28), artist Michael Joo, conceptual artist Fred Wilson (Nov. 18), and composer Marina Rosenfeld (Dec. 2).
