NEW YORK, March 10, 2009 – This spring, The New School, including Parsons The New School for Design and The Vera List Center for Art and Politics, presents a range of events in the fields of art and design. Highlights include AFTERTASTE 3 (April 3-4), an interior design symposium exploring the five senses and featuring James Auger, Mayer Rus, and Sissel Tolaas, and others; and Emerging Exchanges: New Architectures of India (April 30-May 1), a conference exploring the changing landscape of Indian architecture featuring architect, critic, and historian Kenneth Frampton, among others.

In conjunction with the major new exhibition Into the Open: Positioning Practice (through April 30), which explores architecture and civic engagement and was the official U.S. representation at the 2008 Venice Biennale, Parsons will present a symposium (April 24) with several participating designers, including Teddy Cruz, Deborah Gans, and Laura Kurgan.
Parsons will also host a series of exhibitions highlighting student collaborations and thesis work, including Oyster Gardens of NYC (April 15-24), a multimedia exhibition detailing a yearlong project to design and construct a functional oyster garden in New York City waterways; the Integrated Design Curriculum Thesis Exhibition (April 29-May 8); the School of Art, Media, and Technology Thesis Exhibition (May 15-26), and the School of Constructed Environments Thesis Exhibition (May 20-27). In July, Parsons will present Dormitorium: Film ‘Decors’ by the Quay Bros. (July 15-Oct. 4), an exhibition of work by celebrated stop-motion animators Timothy and Stephen Quay.
As part of its Fine Arts Lecture Series, curated by Fine Arts chair Coco Fusco, Parsons will present talks by noted artists and designers, including Wangechi Mutu (April 1), Emily Jacir (April 15), and Rebecca Quaytman (April 8). In the weekly lecture series Global Issues in Design, Parsons faculty member Susan Yelavich explores issues in global design, featuring Constantin Boym (March 25), founder of Boym Design Studio, and Fereshteh Daftari (April 7), curator and art historian, among others. The New School and the Aperture Foundation continue their signature lecture series, Confounding Expectations, with Photography in Context. Access to Life: Photojournalism on AIDS (April 22), a panel discussion on the experience of photographing AIDS patients undergoing treatment. The Vera List Center and SculptureCenter present the third season of their lecture series on themes in contemporary sculpture with appearances by Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster (March 16), and Simon Starling (April 13).
