NEW YORK, New York, October 20, 2009— The Mannes Orchestra with guest conductor JoAnn Falletta, Mannes alumna and music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic and Virginia Symphony, will perform at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center on Wednesday, November 18 at 8:00 p.m. Pianist Jialiang Wu, Mannes student and Concerto Competition winner, will accompany the orchestra to perform Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Minor and Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique. This is the second of four performances by the Mannes Orchestra at Lincoln Center this season.

JoAnn Falletta earned her Bachelor of Music degree at Mannes in 1976.  She was awarded an Honorary Degree by The New School in 2007. She previously guest conducted the Mannes Orchestra in Alice Tully Hall in April, 2004. Falletta has been invited to guest conduct many of the world’s finest symphony orchestras. Highlights of her recent and upcoming international guest conducting appearances include the Netherlands Radio Orchestra; National Philharmonic of Lithuania; Orquestra de Extremadura (Spain); Warsaw National Philharmonic; Kraków Philharmonic; Orchestra National de Belgique; Seoul Philharmonic; BBC Philharmonic in Manchester; Ensemble Kanazawa (Japan); Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra; Orchestra of Asturias (Spain); Rotterdam Philharmonic; Orchestre National De Lyon; Northwest German Philharmonic; Royal Scottish National Orchestra; and the Lisbon Metropolitan Symphony. This past May, she led the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center Spring Gala.

Falletta is the recipient of many of the most prestigious conducting awards, including the Seaver/National Endowment for the Arts Conductors Award for exceptionally gifted American conductors, the coveted Stokowski Competition, and the Toscanini, Ditson and Bruno Walter Awards for conducting, as well as the American Symphony Orchestra League’s prestigious John S. Edwards Award.

Jialiang Wu, winner of the 2009 Mannes Concerto Competition, is currently a third-year undergraduate, studying with Piano Department Chair Pavlina Dokovska. Before coming to Mannes, he attended the Shanghai Conservatory Primary and Middle School in his native China, where he was a top prizewinner at various competitions, and performed in major venues. Jialiang performed in the 2008 Shanghai International Piano Festival and was praised by the world renowned virtuoso Lazar Berman.
