Mannes college the new school for music
announces 2009-10 classical music
performances and events

 

NEW YORK, New York, August 18, 2009—Mannes College The New School for Music has announced its fall schedule, featuring numerous events of special interest.

Highlights of this season include the first two free concerts by the Mannes Orchestra at Alice Tully Hall. The first on October 15 will be conducted by David Hayes, Director of Orchestral and Conducting Studies, in a program featuring Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, Debussy’s Nocturnes, and Brahms’s Symphony No. 4. The second concert on November 18 will be conducted by JoAnn Falletta, Mannes alumna and Music Director of the Buffalo Philharmonic and Virginia Symphony in a program featuring Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with Mannes student Jialiang Wu as soloist, and Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique.

Other distinctive events include the Schneider Concerts Series, celebrating its 40th anniversary with an opening concert on October 11 featuring pianist Peter Serkin, who made his New York debut at The New School in 1959 at age 12. He will perform with Madalyn and Cicely Parnas.  The piano trio will perform works by Brahms, Schubert, and Bridge.

The Orion String Quartet —Concert 1
Mannes Ensemble-in-Residence

Admission: Orion Quartet tickets are free and must be picked up on the day of the concert starting at 6:00 p.m. at the security desk, one ticket per person. Seating begins at approximately 7:30 p.m.
Mannes Ensemble-in-Residence The Orion String Quartet, with violinists Daniel and Todd Phillips, violist Steven Tenenbom, and cellist Timothy Eddy, gained immediate attention in the classical music world when its founding members, each with distinguished solo and chamber music careers, formed the ensemble in 1987. They have been consistently praised for the fresh perspective and individuality they bring to performing a broad range of repertoire. In its residency at Mannes, the Orion Quartet presents four free concerts each year, in addition to working with student ensembles in a series of chamber music master classes. The program is TBA.

The Schneider Concerts Series celebrates its 40th anniversary with an opening concert featuring the world-renowned pianist Peter Serkin, who made his New York debut at The New School in 1959 at age 12. He returns to the Tishman Auditorium stage with gifted teenage artists Madalyn and Cicely Parnas, who, at ages 16 and 18 respectively, have been hailed by the New York Times for their “lush tones” and “pinpoint precision.” The Parnas/Serkin Trio performs works by Brahms, Schubert, and Bridge.

Founded in 1994, the Zemlinsky Quartet has continued the deep Czech string quartet tradition. The ensemble received top prizes in the 2007 Banff International String Quartet competition, the 2005 Prague Spring International Music Competition, and the 2006 London International String Quartet Competition.The Zemlinsky Quartet will perform music of Haydn, Janáček, and Zemlinsky.

One of the most exciting chamber ensembles currently emerging on the concert scene, the Tessera Quartet has already created an energetic presence, captivating audiences with its glowing sound and bold interpretations. A compelling mosaic of four accomplished young soloists, the Tessera Quartet was formed under the guidance of the renowned Juilliard String Quartet in 2007. The Quartet will perform the music of Mendelssohn, Liebermann, and Sibelius.
