New York, October 23, 2009—On November 12, The School of Design Strategies at Parsons The New School for Design will present Roger Martin, dean of the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, in conversation with Bruce Nussbaum, BusinessWeek Contributing Editor and Visiting Professor of Innovation and Design at The New School. Nussbaum and Martin will discuss the route followed by successful design thinkers in business, science and the arts, on the occasion of the publication of Martin’s new book, The Design of Business: Why Design Thinking is The Next Competitive Advantage.

The Design of Business shows how leading companies use design thinking to push knowledge through stages in ways that produce breakthrough innovations and competitive advantage. Martin’s book is full of colorful stories and practical guidelines, which illustrate how to combine proof-based analytical thinking with possibility-based “abductive thinking”, along with how to change structures and processes to move knowledge from one stage to the next, develop the key tools of design thinkers: observation, imagination and configuration and more. The Design of Business reveals the true foundation of successful, profitable innovation, connecting the worlds of business and design.

About Roger Martin
Roger Martin has served as dean of the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto since 1998. He was formerly a director of Monitor Company, a global strategy consulting firm based in Cambridge, Massachusetts were he served for two years as co-head of the firm. Martin continues to serve as a senior advisor to CEOs of some of the world’s leading companies. His research interests lie in the areas of global competitiveness, integrative thinking, business design, and corporate citizenship.

He is author of The Responsibility Virus (Basic Books, 2002), The Opposable Mind (Harvard Business Press, 2007), and many articles in leading business publications, including Harvard Business Review, Business Week, Barron’s, Financial Times, The Washington Post, and Fast Company. In 2007, BusinessWeek named Martin one of the ten most influential business professors in the world. On October 14, he was ranked 32nd on Forbes’ and the Times of London’s list of the top 50 management thinkers in the world.

About Bruce Nussbaum
Bruce Nussbaum, one of the leading thinkers and writers about the intersections of innovation and design, is a Visiting Professor of Innovation and Design at The New School. He works broadly across The New School, with a faculty “home base” in the School of Design Strategies at Parsons The New School for Design, which houses degree programs in design and management, integrated design and environmental studies, and is developing new degrees in Transdisciplinary Design, Design and Management and Urban Design. Nussbaum is best known for his continuing role as an editor, writer, and blogger about design and innovation for BusinessWeek. He was named by I.D. magazine as one of the “forty most influential people in design,” and in 2008 he was a Finalist for the “Design Mind” National Design Award by the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. He was recently appointed to the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Design.
