Symposium on Illustration and Motion Featuring Richard McGuire, Lauren Redness, Jody Rosen, & Joel Smith

NEW YORK, November 4, 2009 - On Wednesday, November 11, the BFA Illustration program at Parsons The New School for Design will present Moving Pictures, a symposium exploring ideas of motion in illustration. Featuring panels and discussions with prominent illustrators and writers, Moving Pictures will be held from 7pm to 10pm in the New School Jazz Performance Space, 55 West 13th Street. The event is free and open to the public.

The evening will be divided into four presentations moderated by Lauren Redniss, New School illustration faculty member, author of Century Girl and the forthcoming Radioactive, An Atomic Love Story. Redniss will talk about secret lives and invisibility. A conversation between writers Jody Rosen, music critic for Slate, and Joel Smith, curator of photography at the Princeton University Art Museum, will consider real and imaginary map making: Rosen, through his research on "The Knowledge," the exhaustive, mind-bending geographical training required of London taxi drivers and Smith, through the work of legendary cartoonist Saul Steinberg, best known for his work in The New Yorker. Richard McGuire, artist, musician and current fellow at the New York Public Library's Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers, will screen his recent film Fears of the Dark and give a sneak preview of his new book.

Parsons' BFA Illustration Program engages students as visual artists who are poised to become influential, pictorial communicators. Through studio and digital course work, the program builds proficiency in drawing and media-based skills, creativity in concepts and problem solving, awareness of art and design and current social and cultural concerns, and fluency in technological tools and software. Moving Pictures is one of many events organized by the Illustration program to foster a critical dialogue on the field of illustration. Each fall, the program organizes a symposium that brings together leading artists, designers, and writers to discuss the past and future of the craft, and its place in academic and pop culture.
