New York, NY, May 14, 2009—Mannes College The New School for Music, as it has done for more than a decade, will present an exciting array of classical music institutes, festivals, and seminars this summer that go beyond the usual fare. These include The Ninth Annual Mannes Beethoven Institute, May 31-June 7; The Institute and Festival for Contemporary Performance, June 15-24; The Ninth Annual New York Guitar Seminar at Mannes, July 8-12; and The Eleventh Annual International Keyboard Institute and Festival, July 19–August 2

Except where noted, all events will be held at Mannes College The New School for Music, 150 West 85th Street. Ticket prices vary for each series, and are indicated below. The Ninth Annual Mannes Beethoven Institute

The ninth annual Mannes Beethoven Institute explores Beethoven’s duo sonatas, piano trios, and string quartets. For more information, call 212-580-0210, Ext. 4879 or visit the Beethoven Institute website: www.mannes.edu/bi.

Participating faculty includes: pianists Yuri Kim, Jacob Lateiner, Robert McDonald, Thomas Sauer, Ignat Solzhenitsyn, J.Y. Song; violinists David Bowlin, Serena Canin; cellist Peter Stumpf; baritone Thomas Meglioranza: theorist and Dean of Mannes College Joel Lester. Faculty concerts will take place on Wednesday, June 3 at 8:00 p.m., and Friday, June 5 at 8:00 p.m. Student performances will occur on Saturday, June 6 at 1:00 p.m. and Sunday, June 7 beginning at 2:00 p.m.

Admission: $20; tickets are available at the door. Admission is free to the student performances.

Institute and Festival for Contemporary Performance (IFCP)
June 15–24, 2009

The Institute and Festival for Contemporary Performance, now in its sixth year, presents workshops, master classes, lectures, symposiums, and concerts featuring some of the most significant performers, composers, and thinkers working today in contemporary music. Performers include Joel Krosnick, cello; Rolf Schulte, violin; and Marc Ponthus, IFCP founder and pianist, and noted chamber ensemble, Speculum Musicae. Festival programming focuses on the wealth of modern repertoire for solo unaccompanied instruments as well as for chamber ensemble. This institute will also examine, through the addition of video and text elements, as well as generative works from different eras, and new directions in solo performance.

The institute aims not only to present concerts at the highest level of accomplishment, within a forum of ideas and educational support, but also to integrate the younger generation of performers within the larger New York cultural reservoir with its multifaceted possibilities.

Admission: $20; $10 for students; $8 for individual master class or lecture; Student performances are free of charge. Tickets are available at the door beginning one hour prior to each event.

The Ninth New York Guitar Seminar at Mannes brings together an international faculty of 28 renowned performers and teachers for five full days of activities in New York City. From July 8 through 12, the seminar will feature concerts, workshops, and master classes highlighting the rich and diverse heritage of the guitar in music from North, Central, and South America.

The Tenth-Annual International Keyboard Institute and Festival (IKI)

The International Keyboard Institute, founded by Mannes alumnus and faculty member Jerome Rose, features performances by world-renowned pianists, master classes, and symposia. Two concert series will take place this year: the Prestige Series concert at 6:00 p.m., features accomplished young artists from around the world, many of them recent winners of major international competitions; and the Masters Series concerts at 8:30 p.m. feature guest artists and faculty.

This year the guest artist faculty includes distinguished pianists Joaquín Achúcarro, Philippe Entremont and Olga Kern, each of whom will give a master classes and perform a recital. Founder/Director Jerome Rose will perform the opening concert on July 19.

Guest artists Alon Goldstein and Piotr Paleczny will make festival concert debuts at the Masters Series. Mykola Suk, Alexander Kobrin, Jeffrey Swann, HaeSun Paik, Steven Mayer, Jose Ramos Santana, and Yuan Sheng will return to give recitals and master classes. David Dubal will give a lecture “Anniversaries: Haydn, Mendelssohn, Albéniz.” Byron Janis joins David Dubal at the mid-point of the festival for “An Afternoon with Byron Janis,” an event that will be free to the public.
