Betsey Johnson to Present Award;
May 14 at Lord & Taylor Rooftop Terrace

NEW YORK, May 8, 2009—Parsons The New School for Design will present the first AAS Icon Award to Senior Vice President of IMG Fashion Fern Mallis. The award will be presented to Mallis by famed fashion designer Betsey Johnson during the 10th Annual AAS Line Debut on Thursday May 14th, at the exclusive roof top terrace of New York landmark Lord & Taylor.

The award recognizes Ms. Mallis’ groundbreaking achievements in the fashion industry, among them creating and organizing what is now known as “Fashion Week” in New York City, her work with various charities including Fashion Targets Breast Cancer and 7th on Sale, and her undying support of emerging fashion designers.

The AAS Line Debut is the year-end fashion event for the Parsons AAS Fashion Studies program. A jury comprised of industry professionals has pre-selected 40 looks by graduating students. These emerging designers have been guided through the rigorous program to create their garments from concept to construction.

At the event, Parsons will also present the Stacey Nipps Alumni Award, which will be given to AAS alumni Jen Kao. Kao, who received a Bachelors degree in Studio Art from NYU prior to her post-graduate work at Parsons, launched her high-end womenswear line in 2007. In addition, Parsons will announce the first CRYSTALLIZED - Swarovski Elements Award. The Award is the culmination of a semester-long project in Parsons AAS Fashion Studies Accessories Studio. Each student submitted sketches, and received crystals to complete their projects. Swarovski will select one student to receive a $2,500 prize. Two runners up will each receive a $1,000 prize. This fall, Bloomingdales will showcase the designs from this studio.

Parsons’ highly regarded Associate in Applied Science (AAS) programs in Fashion Studies (fashion design), Fashion Marketing, Graphic Design and Interior Design offer an intensive course of study to motivated students who want to launch new careers, advance in their fields, or start their own businesses. AAS students come from a remarkable range of academic and professional backgrounds. For more information, please visit www.newschool.edu/aas.
