THE NEW SCHOOL PARTNERS WITH QUESTBRIDGE TO INCREASE OUTREACH TO LOW-INCOME STUDENTS

Provides Full Scholarships for Qualifying Students to Attend
Parsons The New School for Design

New York, August 11, 2008 – The New School today announced it has partnered with QuestBridge, a non-profit program that links low-income students with educational opportunities at some of the nation’s best colleges. As part of the program, The New School will provide four-year scholarships covering tuition and room and board to qualifying low-income students attending Parsons The New School for Design.

“QuestBridge has created a pioneering program to remove the financial hurdles that stand between many talented students and quality higher education,” said Bob Kerrey, president of The New School. “This partnership builds on our longstanding commitment to make The New School accessible to a diversity of students, regardless of their financial situation. We look forward to welcoming QuestBridge students to our campus in the fall of 2009.”

QuestBridge’s National College Match Program connects high-achieving, low-income students with admission and scholarships to approximately 26 partner colleges and universities. In 2007-8, more than 900 students received admissions and significant scholarship grants from partner institutions, including Princeton, Stanford and Yale universities.

The College Match program is a two-phase, alternative early admissions program. During the first phase, students fill out and submit the special College Match application to QuestBridge, ranking up to eight of QuestBridge’s partner schools based on their preferences. QuestBridge evaluates these students to select finalists. During the second phase, QuestBridge forwards the applications of finalists to the partner schools that students have ranked. The partner schools then evaluate the applications, and if they choose to offer admission to a finalist, that student has been ‘matched’ with his or her choice school. Students who match with multiple colleges attend the institution at the top of the ranking list that they submitted with their application.

“The New School is a natural QuestBridge partner,” said co-founder Michael McCullough. “It has long served as an academic home to those seeking to learn from a diversity of ideas and backgrounds. We are proud to expand our network of high-quality partners to include The New School, and further our joint mission of democratizing access and opportunity in higher education.”

The New School determines a student’s eligibility for financial aid by considering family income, assets, liabilities, family size, the number of students in college and extenuating circumstances. At Parsons The New School for Design, 75% of students received need-based aid, and the average aid award is more than $15,000.
