NEW YORK, March 17, 2008 – Parsons The New School for Design will present an installation of work by students in its MFA Fine Arts program at the third PULSE Contemporary Art Fair, taking place at Pier 40 on the West Side Highway from March 27-30, 2008. Called PULSE PAUSE, the reading room will be designed by students chosen by independent curator Jeffrey Walkowiak and is the first on-site installation to be commissioned by the organizers of the fair.

"Being selected to create an onsite installation at PULSE is an amazing opportunity for our students to interact with the larger art world," said Parsons MFA Fine Arts Director Anthony Aziz. "Working with Jeffrey, the students will create a space for reading, relaxation, discussion and contemplation set apart from the frenetic pace of the fair itself. In addition to being able to view work from the MFA Fine Arts studios at Parsons, the space will feature books, magazines and other media that will enable visitors to sample what students are reading and thinking about in today's art schools."

The work chosen for PULSE PAUSE represents a cross section of the creative production that is taking place within the Parsons MFA Fine Arts program. Seen within congruence of one another, this grouping embodies the spirit of a generation of artists who have been living with art after post-modernism and also with the prominent ideology of the "green revolution." "Although their work many not be overtly preoccupied with issues such as the environment or global warming, their practice, both formally and conceptually, incorporates ideas of reusing materials, images, and styles to create their own voice," said Walkowiak.

Among the artists participating in the program is Brandon Nastanski, who is creating a one-person "speakeasy" located behind a moveable bookshelf. Most of the materials used in this central piece as well as the external furniture in the rest of the space are created from found and collected objects. "Within my work I look to create spaces within spaces," said Nastanski. "Places of discovery where the viewer can physically leave one space and enter another. This piece will allow one to leave their experiences of the art fair behind and physically and psychologically enter another space, time, and experience."

Following its participation in PULSE, Parsons will present an exhibition of work of its graduating MFA Fine Arts Students at an exhibition on view at The Kitchen in New York from May 1-10, 2008. An opening reception will be held on May 1 from 6-8 pm. For more information, please visit www.parsons.newschool.edu/finearts.
