THE NEW SCHOOL PUBLIC PROGRAMS: ART AND DESIGN

NEW YORK, March 4, 2008 – This spring, The New School, including Parsons The New School for Design and The Vera List Center for Art and Politics, presents a range of events in the fields of art and design. In conjunction with the opening of the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center, a new campus center that includes state-of-the-art galleries and program spaces, Parsons will present Soft Parade: Selections from the New School Art Collection through June 20. In July, the Center will feature the I.D. Magazine 54th Annual Design Review (July 9-September 28), a rare and timely look at the state of contemporary design.

Among the spring highlights are Aftertaste 2 (Apr. 4-5), a symposium that explores critical issues in the field of contemporary interior design, featuring James Casbere, the Quay Brothers , Penny Sparke, and Allan Wexler. Art and Money (Apr. 14), a roundtable discussion on the current art market, featuring Jeffrey Deitch, Amy Cappellazzo, Kathy Halbreich and others. The MA Program in the History of Decorative Arts and Design, jointly offered by Parsons and the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, will present a symposium on the decorative arts and design with a keynote address by design historian Victor Margolin (Apr. 3).

Parsons will also present lectures by noted designers, critics, writers and artists including painter and filmmaker David Ellis (Apr. 9), writer and architect Michelle Addington (Apr. 17), architect and entrepreneur Danny Forster (Apr. 28), and sculptor Kiki Smith (Apr. 30). In collaboration with SculptureCenter, the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School will present a lecture by artist Robert Morris (Apr. 7). In addition, the Vera List Center will present Looking Back Now: Performance over Three Decades: 1960s-1980s, a panel discussion with art historians Carrie Lambert-Beatty, Johanna Burton, and Barbara Clausen (Apr. 24).
