THE NEW SCHOOL PUBLIC PROGRAMS: ART & DESIGN

NEW YORK, August 22, 2008 – This fall, The New School, including Parsons The New School for Design and The Vera List Center for Art and Politics, presents a range of events in the fields of art and design.

Parsons The New School for Design will be inaugurating the first fall programming season in the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center, Parsons’ new venue for art and design exhibitions and public programming, with Ours: Democracy in the Age of Branding (Oct. 16—Feb. 1), a major new exhibition exploring how democracy has become a global brand. The exhibition features work by an international roster of emerging and established contemporary artists including Paul Chan, Yael Bartana, Liam Gillick and Judi Werthein. It will also include a series of programs co-presented by Parsons and the Vera List Center, including lectures by philosopher Simon Critchley (Sept. 18) and Boris Groys (Nov. 17) and a symposium on illustration and politics (Nov. 15) featuring a panel of accomplished cartoonists.

The Sheila C. Johnson Design Center will also host a series of exhibitions highlighting student projects and collaborations. Ajkem’a Loy’a (Sept. 19—Oct. 3) will document a month-long student trip to Guatemala, organized through the school’s partnership with CARE, to aid a women’s artisan group in developing a sustainable business model for their local crafts business. Exquisite Corpse (Oct. 10—31) will display photography created by Parsons and Sydney College of Art students exploring the theme of cultural dislocation. Design Workshop: BronXscape (Nov. 10—23) will document the latest project by the Parsons Design Workshop, a graduate level design/build program, which created a rooftop space on a new residential complex for young adults aging out of foster care.

The New School will also co-sponsor a number of events with prominent organizations, including 40 Years of New York City Design (Sept. 23), a New York magazine panel featuring MoMA curator Paola Antonelli, hotelier Andre Balazs, New York magazine editor Wendy Goodman, architect Richard Meier, and designer Murray Moss. The Aperture foundation will also host a series of three panels on contemporary issues in photography, including Photography ©®(Oct. 15), discussing copyright issues, Framing the Presidency (Nov. 12), and Street Art, Street Life (Dec. 3).

Parsons will also host a series of lectures by notable art world figures, including artist Daniel Rich (Sept. 17), Iraq-war artist Steve Mumford (Oct. 1), visual artist Jill Magid (Oct. 29), critic Linda Nochlin (Nov. 10), Bellwether gallerists Allison Kave and Becky Smith (Nov. 19), and painter Mary Heilmann (Dec. 10).
