THE NEW SCHOOL NAMES LISA J. SERVON
DEAN OF MILANO THE NEW SCHOOL
for MANAGEMENT AND URBAN POLICY

New York, NY — The New School has announced the appointment of Lisa J. Servon as Dean of Milano The New School for Management and Urban Policy. Dr. Servon is an internationally known scholar in the areas of community economic development and urban poverty policy, focusing on issues of racial and gender equity and U.S. microenterprise development programs.

For more than thirty years, Milano The New School for Management and Urban Policy has trained professionals to become effective managers and policymakers in government, business, and the nonprofit sector. The School offers masters degrees in nonprofit management, organizational change management, urban policy analysis and management and a doctorate in public and urban policy. Milano programs balance theory, original research, and experiential learning, using New York City as a social science laboratory.

“I am proud to welcome Lisa Servon as the new Dean of Milano,” said Bob Kerrey, president of The New School. “Lisa has a long and distinguished career working on the cutting edge of community development and finance, including current hot-button issues such as micro-enterprise, bridging the digital divide and urban economic development. She has consistently utilized her field expertise and research experience to engage students in the real-world issues they will face as managers and public policy professionals. I look forward to working with Lisa as a leader with the ability to bring academic flexibility and professional creativity to Milano and the University as a whole.”

Dr. Servon came to Milano in 2001. During her seven years at Milano, she has been associate director of the Community Development Research Center and director of the Community Development Finance Project. In 2008, she received the Distinguished University Teaching Award.

Her specific areas of expertise include micro-enterprise development, the digital divide, and capacity-building for community-based organizations. Dr. Servon’s work has been funded by the Open Society Institute, the Aspen Institute, the Ford Foundation, the Fannie Mae Foundation, and others. She has held the position of Senior Research Fellow at PolicyLink, the New America Foundation, and the Center for Work Life Policy. Dr. Servon is the author of numerous journal articles and two books: Bridging the Digital Divide: Technology, Community, and Public Policy (Blackwell 2002) and Bootstrap Capital: Microenterprises and the American Poor (Brookings 1999). She also co-edited Gender and Planning: A Reader, which won the Planetizen award for one of the top ten books of 2006.

Dr. Servon holds a BA in Political Science from Bryn Mawr College, an MA in History of Art from the University of Pennsylvania, and a PhD in Urban Planning from the University of California, Berkeley. Before coming to The New School, she was an associate professor at the Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University and an assistant professor in the planning program at the University of Texas at Austin.
