THE NEW SCHOOL PUBLIC PROGRAMS: ART AND DESIGN

NEW YORK, October 5, 2007–The New School, including Parsons The New School for Design and The Vera List Center for Art and Politics, presents a range of events in the fields of art and design.

Among the highlights, Parsons will present Illustration in the Age of Anxiety (Nov. 10), a symposium on the current political climate and its effects on illustration, including discussions with 20th century illustration masters Ed Koren, Ed Sorel, and Ben Katchor. Parsons will also host lectures by noted designers, critics, writers and artists including celebrated graphic artist Robert Massin (Nov. 7); Chelsea art gallery dealers Becky Smith and Zach Feuer (Nov. 7); world-renowned graphic designer, artist and MIT computer scientist John Maeda (Nov. 14): and acclaimed artist Lorna Simpson (Dec. 5).

Parsons will also present several programs dealing with issues of sustainability and social responsibility. Design with a Conscience: Public Housing (Nov. 5), brings together architects Michael Maltzan and Andy Bernheimer to discuss new forms of public housing. Rethinking Fashion includes a panel discussion about corporate conscience (Oct. 23), featuring Nau sportswear executives Mark Galbraith and Ian Yolles, and   another about the challenges of sustainability and corporate responsibility (Nov. 5) with fashion industry leaders Julie Gilhart, Scott Hahn, Helen Job, and Marci Zaroff.

In collaboration with the Public Art Fund, The Vera List Center for Art and Politics will present lectures with renowned installation artist Phoebe Washburn (Oct. 24), and Canadian multimedia artist Stan Douglas (Nov. 7). The New School, in collaboration with the Aperture Foundation, will also present a panel discussion on the intersection of performance and photography (Nov. 14) moderated by PERFORMA founder RoseLee Goldberg, as part of the Confounding Expectations: Photography in Context series.
