ANNOUNCES 2007-2008 CLASSICAL MUSIC PERFORMANCES AND EVENTS

Highlights Include Two Carnegie Hall Concerts by The Mannes Orchestra and a Nine-Concert Cycle of Beethoven’s 32 Piano Sonatas Performed by Mannes Students

NEW YORK, New York, September 11, 2007 — Mannes College The New School for Music has announce d that The Mannes Orchestra will appear at The Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College (November 3) and Carnegie Hall (November 8) in performances of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9 in D Minor and Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms (with the Riverside Choral Society).  The Mannes Orchestra will also perform Jennifer Higdon’s Concerto for Orchestra at the Fisher Center of Bard College on February 16, 2008 and again in its New York City premiere at Carnegie Hall on February 19, 2008.

Jennifer Higdon, one of America’s most frequently performed living composers, is the Composer-in-Residence at Mannes for the 2007–08 academic year. The Times of London wrote of her work, “It is rare to witness a big new orchestral piece being acclaimed as Concerto for Orchestra was cheered on Friday after its first British performance.” The February 19, 2008 Mannes Orchestra concert at Carnegie Hall will also feature the eminent pianist Vladimir Feltsman in Bach’s Concerto in D Minor, BWV 1052 and Schnittke’s Concerto for Piano and Strings.

Additional highlights of the Fall 2007 season include master classes by violinist Pamela Frank (September 25) and pianist Richard Goode (October 9); a lecture by Vladimir Feltsman on the late works of Beethoven (October 23); the Nadia Reisenberg Award recital of rising pianist Ilya Kazantsev (November 29); concerts by the Orion String Quartet (September 27 and November 1); and Schneider Concert presentations of Aviv String Quartet (October 21), Enso String Quartet (November 18), and Janaki String Trio (December 9).
