THE NEW SCHOOL PUBLIC PROGRAMS: ART AND DESIGN

NEW YORK, August 13, 2007 – This fall, The New School, including Parsons The New School for Design and The Vera List Center for Art and Politics, presents a range of events in the fields of art and design.

Among the highlights, Parsons will present lectures by noted designers, critics, writers and artists including British designer Anthony Dunne, whose practice explores the social, cultural and ethical implications of emerging technologies (Sept. 12); Boston Globe art critic Ken Johnson (Sept. 19); Chelsea art gallery dealers Becky Smith and Zach Feuer (Nov. 7); 20th century illustration masters Jules Feiffer, Ed Koren and Ed Sorel (Nov. 10); and world-renowned graphic designer, artist and MIT computer scientist John Maeda (Nov. 14): and acclaimed artist Lorna Simpson (Dec. 5). 

Parsons also will launch a new programming series, Design with a Conscience, with a panel discussion about new forms of public housing (Nov. 5) featuring architects Michael Maltzan and Andy Bernheimer. In addition, Parsons faculty member and noted design critic Susan Yelavich will moderate a panel discussion based on her new publication Contemporary World Interiors featuring architects Stephen Cassell, Linda Pollak and Billie Tsien (Oct. 4).

The Vera List Center presents 9 Scripts from a Nation at War, a work conceived and exhibited by its 2006-07 fellows Andrea Geyer, Sharon Hayes, Ashley Hunt, Katya Sander, and David Thorne at the recent Documenta 12 (Sept. 17); and in collaboration with the Aperture Foundation, The New School will present the series Confounding Expectations: Photography in Context. The series will include panel discussions about: legendary photographer Lisette Model, featuring photographers Larry Fink, Gary Schneider, Ann Thomas, and Rosalind Solomon whom she mentored while teaching at The New School (Sept. 26); artists who collaborate with teens, featuring photographer Dawoud Bey and teens involved in the Expanding the Walls program at The Studio Museum in Harlem (Oct. 17); and photography and the performing arts, organized in conjunction with PERORMA07, the second biennial of new visual art performance (Nov. 14).
