THE SCHWARTZ CENTER FOR ECONOMIC POLICYANALYSIS (SCEPA)
PRESENTS

Realistic Growth Policy for Our Time: A Conference Featuring Leading Economists
The New School, 55 West 13th Street (Near Sixth Avenue), Second Floor
April 13, 2007, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

New York, NY--On April 13, a full-day conference at The New School will shed fresh light on one of the hottest topics in economics today: the relationship between income distribution and economic growth. Leading economists —including Robert Gordon (Northwestern), Robert Pollin (U-Mass), and Michael Piore (MIT)—will debate major issues like inequality in the American economy, missing foundations for growth, and demand-led growth policy.

The aim is to spark a lively dialogue between two sets of influential scholars: on the one hand, those focused on labor market regulation, industrial relations, and corporate governance; on the other hand, those focused on growth, income distribution, and the centrality of economic institutions. Together, they will explain how progressive policy options can take shape in our current economic climate. The conference honors the legacy of David Gordon, a major public economist who taught at The New School until his death in 1996.

The schedule of presentations is as follows:

9:30 a.m.  Jeff Madrick (SCEPA): Opening Remarks

10:00 a.m. Robert Gordon (Northwestern): Keynote Address on Unsettled Issues in the Rise of American Inequality

11:00 a.m. Panel on Demand-led Policies for Growth: What Theory Tells Us
Lance Taylor (SCEPA), Servaas Storm (Delft University of Technology), Pascal Petit (CEPREMAP/University of Paris)

1:30 p.m. Panel on Missing Foundations for Growth
Michael Piore (MIT), Michael Reich (UC, Berkeley), Edward Wolff (New York University)

3:00 p.m.  Panel III:  Inequality and the American Economy

4:30 p.m. Conference Ends

ABOUT THE SCHWARTZ CENTER FOR POLICY ANALYSIS (SCEPA) AT THE NEW SCHOOL

The Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis, made possible through a generous gift from Irene and Bernard L. Schwartz, is the active economic research arm of the New School for Social Research. Economists at the center study economic growth, employment, and inequality in the U.S. economy and its global context. Each year the center hosts policy workshops, publishes topical policy notes, and sponsors conferences featuring top economists.
