WHO: An acclaimed conductor of opera, oratorio, and symphonic works, Joseph Colaneri has been Artistic Director of the Opera Program at Mannes College since 1998. He is also now in his ninth season as a member of the conducting roster of the Metropolitan Opera. Colaneri continues to thrive in preparing and guiding Mannes vocalists and performers in the early stages of their professional careers. As Anne Midgette has written in the New York Times, “People in the opera world often ask: Where are all the good, healthy young voices? Here's an answer: at the Mannes College of Music... Credit goes to Joseph Colaneri… If this is the kind of work he does here, the program should be getting even more attention.”
ABOUT: Every spring mezzo-soprano legend Regina Resnik, master teacher-in-residence at Mannes, instructs students in the opera program. Both the program and her experience in it she recently called “ambitious and rewarding.” During a four-to-five week period of intensive evening and weekend rehearsals, Resnik coaches student performers in vocal technique and style, along with other aspects of operatic performance. As thoroughly as possible, she prepares them, individually and collectively, for a fully staged production that runs for two evenings under the direction of Joseph Colaneri and with musical accompaniment from The Mannes Orchestra.
