The New School For Jazz And Contemporary Music Presents
THE COLLECTIVE BLACK ARTISTS:
How Collective Black Artists, Inc. Managed the Business of Making Music in 1970s New York
Wednesday, February 22, at 8:00 p.m. at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music
55 West 13th St., Fifth Floor Performance Space

Featuring Founding Members of CBA, including Jimmy Owens, Reggie Workman,
Don Moore, Leonard Goines, and Cobi Narita

WHAT:

The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music hosts a reunion of the founding members of the Collective Black Artists, Inc. (CBA), who recount their experiences and explore the relevance of CBA to musicians who face similar social and economic challenges in today’s performance world. A support network for black jazz musicians, CBA was formed in 1970 to help black artists navigate and manage the business and performance aspects of their careers at a time when they were disenfranchised from the mainstream operations of clubs, recording studios, orchestras, and Broadway shows. These musicians took matters into their own hands and created a structure that many contemporary groups have modeled themselves after today.

The event at New School Jazz features bassist and CBA co-founder Reggie Workman and trumpeter and educator Jimmy Owens, both of whom are also faculty members at New School Jazz.  At the school, Owens teaches two of the courses the Black Collective originally offered for musicians and the public: "Philosophy of Practice Techniques" and "The Business Aspects of Music." Also featured on the panel are Jazz Center of New York Founder Cobi Narita, bassist Don Moore, and jazz stalwart Leonard Goines.  More than 20 of its members are expected to attend the event which will serve as a reunion for CBA.  Elombe Brath, host and producer for WBAI, moderates.

The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music is the musical manifestation of The New School and its legacy. Steeped in progressive tradition while moving forward into new frontiers of sound and experimentation, New School Jazz is a rarity among conservatory music schools. With instructors who are active, professional musicians and the backing of a major university, the school provides its students with the leeway and encouragement to break through artistic barriers, the counsel of veterans in maneuvering through the terrain of the music world, and a solid academic foundation to sustain and enrich their efforts and evolution.
