New York, NY, January 17, 2006—In winter and spring 2006, Mannes College The New School for Music will present a number of noteworthy concerts and performances, including The Mannes Orchestra performing Beethoven’s Missa solemnis with the Philadelphia Singers at Lincoln Center and the Kimmel Center at Philadelphia; The Mannes Opera performing two Puccini one-act operas; a new year-long festival, Bach and the Baroque Legacy, opening January 31; and master classes by Vladimir Feltsman, Claude Frank, Pamela Frank, Richard Goode, Menahem Pressler, Arnold Steinhardt, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and others. The following is a listing of key events.

*Bach and the Baroque Legacy*

Tuesday, January 31, 7 p.m.  This is the inaugural concert of Mannes’ year-long festival, Bach and the Baroque Legacy. Throughout 2006, the music of J.S. Bach, his baroque contemporaries, and later generations influenced by them will come to life through concerts and master classes featuring Mannes’s student artists, distinguished faculty, and guests. Works to be performed by Mannes students and Andrew Hendersen (organist at the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church) include Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in E-Flat Major for Organ, BWV 552, and Trio Sonata from The Musical Offering, BWV 1079; Handel’s Let The Bright Seraphim from Samson for soprano; trumpet and organ From Suite No. 8 in F Minor for keyboard: Prelude & Fugue; Beethoven’s Piano Sonata Piano No. 31 in A-flat Major, op.110; Mendelssohn’s Sonata for Organ in A Major, op. 65, no. 3; and Purcell’s The Blessed Virgin’s Expostulation for Soprano and Continuo. The concert will be held at The Saint Andrew Music Society of Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, 921 Madison Avenue at 74th Street. General admission is $15 at the door; for students and seniors, $10.

Sunday, April 23, 3:30 p.m. Works to be performed by Mannes students and Harvey Burgett (organist at The Church of St. Thomas More) include Bach/Hess’s Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring; Bach/Busoni’s Chaconne; Vivaldi’s Sposo son disprezzata; Bach/Kabalevsky’s Three Organ Preludes and Fugues; Bach/Rachmaninov’s Suite from Partita in E Major for Violin, BWV 1006; Bach’s Passacaglia for Organ in C Minor, BWV 582; Piston’s Suite for Oboe and Piano; and Stravinsky’s Suite Italiennefor Violin and Piano from Pulcinella. The concert will be held at MOREMUSIC, The Church of St. Thomas More, 65 East 89th Street. General admission is $15 at the door; for students and seniors, $10.

May 16, 8 p.m. Works to be performed by Mannes students include Skoryk/Dowland’s “Three Lute Fantasies”; Selections from Skoryk’s “24 Preludes and Fugues”; Lysenko’s Selected Songs and Gavotte for Piano; Hrabovsky’s Homages for Violin and Piano; C.P.E. Bach’s Piano Sonata in A Major, Wq 65/32; Silvestrov’s Messenger for Piano Zaderatsky; Prelude and Fugue in C Major for Piano; J.S. Bach’s Prelude from Cello Suite no. 3 in C Major, BWV 1009; Selections from Kossenko’s Etudes in the Form of Ancient Dances; and Baley’s Rondo: Hopak from Partita no. 3 for Violin and Piano. The concert will be held at The Ukrainian Institute of America, 2 East 79th Street. Admission for UIA members and seniors is $25, for nonmembers, $30, and $20 for students at the door.

*Winter/Spring 2006 Mannes Orchestra Performances*

March 3, 8 p.m.: With guest conductor Otto Werner Mueller, The Mannes Orchestra will perform Chopin’s Piano Concerto no. 2 and Brahms’ First Symphony at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center. The performance will feature pianist Matei Varga, the 2006 Alexis Gregory Concerto Competition Award winner. Free tickets are available at the Alice Tully box office; call 212.875.5050.

May 1, 3 p.m.: With regular conductor David Hayes, The Mannes Orchestra will perform Beethoven’s Missa solemnis at Alice Tully Hall. The performance will feature The Philadelphia Singers and soloists. Free tickets are available at the Alice Tully Box Office; call 212.875.5050. The performance will be repeated at Verizon Hall in the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia on May 14 at 3 p.m. Tickets available from the Verizon Hall Box Office.

*Spring 2006 Mannes Opera*

In May, with director Joseph Colaneri, The Mannes Opera, accompanied by The Mannes Orchestra, will put on two fully staged opera productions of Puccini's Gianni Schicchi and Il Tabarro. The performances will take place May 6, 7:30 p.m. and May 7, 3 p.m., at The Kaye Playhouse, Hunter College, East 68th Street between Park and Lexington Avenues. *The Ernst C. Stiefel Chamber Music Series*

Chamber music has always been an important part of Mannes concert programming. But now, with a generous grant from The Stiefel Foundation, Mannes can offer even more chamber concerts featuring outstanding student ensembles at its downtown and uptown performance spaces.

*Winter/Spring 2006 Schneider Concerts at The New School*

For the past fifty years, The Schneider Concert Series has featured performances by young classical artists on the verge of major careers and their established colleagues. Performances are held in the intimate, acoustically superb Tishman Auditorium. Although not affiliated with Mannes College programming, the Schneider concerts are a long-standing example of The New School’s commitment to classical music. The winter/spring 2006 season will feature five concerts. A concert subscription is $65, and single concert tickets are $15. All concerts take place in Tishman Auditorium, 66 West 12th Street.
