THE NEW SCHOOL FOR JAZZ AND CONTEMPORARY MUSIC PRESENTS THE AFRO-CUBAN JAZZ ORCHESTRA

LED BY BOBBY SANABRIA WITH SPECIAL GUEST CANDIDO CAMERO
Tuesday, November 29, 8pm at The New School

WHAT:

The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music presents a free concert by the New School Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra. Led by renowned drummer, percussionist, composer, arranger, educator, Grammy nominee, and native Nuyorican Bobby Sanabria, the Orchestra will be joined by special guest artist, legendary Cuban conga master Candido Camero.

Bobby Sanabria, who was just voted Percussionist of the Year by the readers of DRUM! Magazine, is a longstanding New School Jazz faculty member. He leads the Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra in performances throughout the academic year, culminating in a free concert each semester featuring a guest jazz master. In this way, students have a rare opportunity to collaborate with outstanding influential artists who move both the traditions and innovations of the music forward.

Born in Havana, Cuba, in 1921, congo master Candido Camero began making music as a young child and recorded his first Latin jazz record with the legendary Machito and his Afro-Cuban Band. Candido has played with many legendary musicians including Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, and Tito Puente.

The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music is the musical manifestation of The New School and its legacy. Steeped in progressive tradition while moving forward into new frontiers of sound and experimentation, New School Jazz is a rarity among conservatory music schools. With instructors who are active, professional musicians and the backing of a major university, the school provides its students with the leeway and encouragement to break through artistic barriers, the counsel of veterans in maneuvering through the terrain of the music world, and a solid academic foundation to sustain and enrich their efforts and evolution.
