FALL 2005 CONCERT AND MASTER CLASS SCHEDULE

Mannes College The New School for Music announces its Fall 2005 season, featuring concerts and master classes that offer a diversity of approach, talent, and experience, from master classes by Vladimir Feltsman, Richard Goode, and Claude Frank, to a performance of Stravinsky’s Petroushka and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 by The Mannes Orchestra, conducted by David Hayes. On December 7, Mannes will present the final concert of its year-long festival “The Late Romantics,” which brings to life, through concerts and master classes, the culminating generations of musical romanticism from the mid-19th to the early-20th century. The Mannes Trio

The Mannes Trio is one of America’s oldest chamber-music ensembles, founded in the 1920s by violinist David Mannes (concertmaster of The New York Symphony and founder of what is now Mannes College). The ensemble, artists in residence at Mannes, won the prestigious Naumburg Foundation Chamber Music Award in 1986 and performs widely in North America.

An artist of immense range and insight, Vladimir Feltsman is recognized as one of the most imaginative and constantly interesting musicians of our time. Born in Moscow in 1952, Feltsman’s vast repertoire encompasses music from the Baroque to the 20th century. A regular guest soloist with every leading orchestra in the United States, Vladimir Feltsman appears on the most prestigious concert series and music festivals all over the world.

Orion String Quartet

Hailed for its exquisite artistry and technical mastery, the Orion String Quartet (artists in residence at Mannes College) has performed during its 17-year history with such legendary figures as Pablo Casals, Rudolf Serkin, Isaac Stern, Pinchas Zukerman, Yo-Yo Ma, Peter Serkin, Andra?Ls Schiff, Wynton Marsalis, members of TASHI and the Beaux Arts Trio, as well as the Budapest, Végh, Galimir, and Guarneri String Quartets. The Orion is Quartet-in-Residence at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

The Mannes Orchestra is one of several performance ensembles featuring talented young classical musicians enrolled at the school. The Orchestra performs six concerts each season in addition to participating in a fully staged production by The Mannes Opera each spring at The Silvia and Danny Kaye Playhouse. David Hayes, Mannes Director of Orchestral and Conducting Studies, is on the conducting staff of The Philadelphia Orchestra and is the music director of The Philadelphia Singers. He has served as cover conductor for the New York Philharmonic, and has guest conducted the Louisiana Philharmonic, the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, the Los Angeles Master Chorale & Sinfonia Orchestra, and the Verbier Festival in Switzerland with percussionist Evelyn Glennie, among others.

Richard Goode has been hailed for music-making of tremendous emotional power, depth and expressiveness, and has been acknowledged worldwide as one of today’s leading interpreters of the music of Beethoven. In regular performances with major orchestras, recitals in the world’s music capitals, and acclaimed recordings, he has won a large and devoted following. His performances of Bach, Mozart, Brahms, Schubert, Schumann, Chopin, Debussy, Janáek, and others have received equal accolades.

Violin master class by Donald Weilerstein

Donald Weilerstein, founding first violinist of the renowned Cleveland Quartet, performed with that ensemble for two decades. Earlier in his career he won both the Munich and Young Concert Artists Competitions. He teaches at the New England Conservatory of Music and Juilliard.

The Mannes Orchestra is one of several performance ensembles featuring talented young classical musicians enrolled at the school. The Orchestra performs six concerts each season in addition to participating in a fully staged production by The Mannes Opera each spring at The Kaye Playhouse. Paul Nadler has distinguished himself as one of the world’s most exciting and proficient symphonic and operatic conductors. Since his debut in 1989, he has led over 40 performances at the Metropolitan Opera, conducting some of today’s most renowned singers including Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Cecilia Bartoli, and Renée Fleming. In concert he has led performances with Glenn Dicterow, Garrick Ohlsson, Misha Dichter, and Elmar Oliveira.

A gala event celebrating the conclusion of Mannes College’s year-long festival “The Late Romantics,” which brings to life through concerts and master classes the culminating generations of musical romanticism, from the mid-19th to the early-20th century, presenting and examining numerous works by the era’s major composers from more than 15 countries. This final concert features piano, vocal, and chamber music masterworks by the great late romantic composers, performed by Mannes College’s most gifted student artists.

Claude Frank has appeared with the world’s foremost orchestras, at major festivals, and at universities since his debut in 1959. Claude Frank is an internationally acclaimed interpreter of the piano literature of Beethoven. Mr. Frank is a repeated soloist with leading orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. He has appeared with many eminent chamber ensembles, including the Guarneri, Juilliard, Cleveland, and Tokyo Quartets. His festival appearances include Menuhin’s Gstaad Festival, the Midsummer Mozart Festival in California, the Marlboro Festival, and the Mostly Mozart Festival.
