The Albert Rivera Quartet
The Albert Rivera Quartet, featuring New School Jazz students and friends Albert Rivera on alto sax, Adam Christgau on drums, Warren Fields on piano, and Luques Curtis on bass, performs original music inspired by John Coltrane.

Monday, September 12, 8 & 10 p.m.
E.J. Strickland Quintet
The E.J. Strickland Quintet features New School Jazz alumni drummer E.J. Strickland and his brother, tenor and soprano saxophonist Marcus Strickland, who have performed with Ravi Coltrane, Nicholas Payton, and Roy Haynes. Band members include George Colligan on piano, New School Jazz alumni Josh Ginsburg on bass and Casey Benjamin on alto saxophone, and special guest, vocalist Nicole Guiland.

Vicki Natale

Pianist and vocalist Vickie Natale, an alumna of New School Jazz and a Brooklyn native, is the 2004 vocal Grand Champion of the hit CBS show, “Star Search.” She will be accompanied by New School Jazz student Daniel Jones on keyboards, Tony Stevenson on bass, Bernard Davis on drums, and Rob Reich on guitar.

Woody Shaw III, “Momentum”

New School Jazz alumnus drummer Woody Louis Armstrong Shaw III is the son of the late, great trumpet innovator and composer, Woody Shaw, Jr. He has taken on the responsibility of maintaining his father’s legacy while creating a new sound and feeling in music through various collaborations and conceptual efforts. He will be joined by Miki Hayama on piano and Abraham Burton on tenor saxophone, plus special guests.

Joan Stiles Quintet, “Mostly Mary Lou”

New School Jazz faculty member Joan Stiles is an accomplished pianist and arranger whohas performed at Birdland and The Blue Note. For her ongoing concert series “Mostly Mary Lou,” she has been arranging and playing the music of Mary Lou Williams. Her ensemble includes Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, Joel Frahm on saxophone, New School Jazz alumnus Ali M. Jackson on drums, and New School Jazz students Kimberly Marshall, vocals, and Joong-Hwa Jung on bass.

Joanne Brackeen Quartet

Consistently ranked by critics and jazz magazines as one of the best jazz pianists in the world, New School Jazz faculty member Joanne Brackeen is known for the creativity, stylistic range, emotional depth, and whimsical spirit of her original works. She will be accompanied by Ugonna Okegwa on bass, and New School Jazz alumni Lakecia Benjamin on alto sax and E.J. Strickland on drums.

Buster Williams Quintet, “Something More”

Grammy award-winning bassist and New School Jazz faculty member Buster Williams formed the “Something More” Quintet in 1990; has toured Europe and Asia, including the first International Jazz Festival in Moscow; and has had countless engagements throughout the United States. He will be accompanied by vibraphonist Stefon Harris, drummer Lenny White, pianist George Colligan, and alto-saxophonist and New School Jazz alumnus Casey Benjamin.

Bill Kirchner and Friends

Called a “Renaissance Man of Jazz” by the Wall Street Journal, Bill Kirchner is a world-class saxophonist, composer-arranger, bandleader, jazz historian, record and radio producer, and member of the New School Jazz faculty. To celebrate the release of his new CD Everything I Love, Bill will be joined by a group of stellar artists who will perform an array of jazz and Brazilian music.

The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music presents renowned drummer, percussionist, composer, arranger, educator, Grammy nominee, and native Nuyorican Bobby Sanabria, who was just voted Percussionist of the Year by the readers of DRUM! magazine. A longstanding New School Jazz faculty member, Bobby leads the Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra in performances throughout the academic year, culminating in a free concert each semester featuring a guest jazz master. In this way, students have a rare opportunity to collaborate with the outstanding influential artists who move both the traditions and innovations of the music forward. Recent participants include Candido Camero, Arturo O'Farill Jr., and Claudio Roditi.
