NEW SCHOOL BOARD OF TRUSTEES EXTENDS PRESIDENT BOB KERREY’S TERM THROUGH JUNE 2011

Philip Scaturro, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of New School University, announced today that the Board of Trustees has extended Bob Kerrey’s term more than 6 years as President of the University. President Kerrey’s term, which was due to end June 2006, has been extended until June 2011.

Speaking at a morning press conference at New School’s Orozco Room, Mr. Scaturro said, “In just four years as President, Bob Kerrey has confidently charted an ambitious course that has given the University far greater national visibility and recognition. By almost every institutional measure, the New School is stronger today than it was four years ago.”

Mr. Kerrey, who became President of the New School in January 2001, said, “Serving for the last four years as president of the New School has been a life-changing experience. The New School, which could exist only in New York City, is a most distinguished and vital academic institution. I am proud to be its seventh president, and I look forward with great excitement to leading the New School in the period ahead.”

Mr. Scaturro noted several areas of outstanding achievement under President Kerrey’s leadership: recruitment of a strong Provost and group of Deans and University Officers, new facilities, extraordinary fund-raising success, substantial enrollment increases, a significantly improved financial balance sheet, and growing the Board of Trustees and Boards of Governors.

Building on this success, President Kerrey has put forth an inspiring vision of the New School’s mission far into this century. This vision is built around a plan that will raise the New School to a still higher level of academic distinction.

“In short,” Mr. Scaturro said, “President Kerrey has prepared the University for significant expansion of the physical campus and for academic greatness. The Board of Trustees is proud of the progress we have made, and it has complete confidence in President Kerrey’s ability to realize these ambitious academic and capital plans. The Trustees are delighted that President Kerrey has accepted the extension of his term until June 2011.”
