MANNES COLLEGE OF MUSIC ANNOUNCES
2003 INTERNATIONAL KEYBOARD INSTITUTE & FESTIVAL
JULY 13 – 27, 2003

(New York, NY – May 12, 2003) New School University’s Mannes College of Music announces that the fifth annual International Keyboard Institute & Festival will take place this summer from July 13 – 27, 2003. The festival, conceived by founder and director Jerome Rose, who performs the opening concert on July 13, attracts some 100 pianists from around the world who come to participate in two weeks of intensive master classes, lectures and concerts led by the festival faculty. Guest artists and faculty will include such distinguished pianists as Abbey Simon, Jeffrey Swan, Earl Wild, Gyorgy Sandor, Steven Mayer, Menahem Pressler, Horacio Gutierrez, among others. This year, the winner of the Dorothy MacKenzie Artist Recognition Awards will be presented in recital at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall.

Other highlights include a concert and lecture on Wagner’s influence in piano literature, an evening with Rosalyn Tureck, a lecture by David Dubal on "What Makes a Great Pianist?" and an evening of works by Art Tatum.

Winner of the Gold Medal at the Busoni Competition, and a graduate of Mannes College of Music and The Juilliard School, Jerome Rose was a student of Leonard Shure, Rudolf Serkin and Adolph Baller. His orchestral appearances have included the Berlin and London Philharmonics, the London and Vienna Symphonies, and the Chicago, San Francisco, and Baltimore Symphonies. Conductors have included Sir Georg Solti, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Christian Thielemann, and David Zinman. Mr. Rose was awarded the Prix du Disque from the Franz Liszt Society of Budapest for his recordings, and the Franz Liszt Medal by the Hungarian Ministry of Culture for organizing the comprehensive Liszt Centennial in Washington D.C. Jerome Rose is on the faculty of Mannes College of Music. Mr. Rose holds an Honorary Doctorate from the State University of New York in recognition of his lifetime achievement in music.
