PARSONS SCHOOL OF DESIGN TO HOLD EXHIBITION:
DIRECTED DIALOGUES - JANUARY 23 - FEBRUARY 22, 2002

(New York, NY - December 11, 2001) Parsons School of Design, a division of New School University, announces Directed Dialogues, an exhibition jointly curated by Stefano Basilico, curator of the New School University Art Collection, and 26 Parsons M.F.A. painting and sculpture students. The exhibit will run from January 23 - February 22, 2002 at the Aronson Galleries at Parsons, 66 Fifth Avenue at 13th Street, NYC. Gallery hours are weekdays, 9 AM – 9 PM and Saturday, 10 AM – 6 PM. The Gallery is closed on Sundays and holidays. For further information on Parsons Exhibitions, call 212/229-8987.

A gallery talk with the curators will be held on Thursday, January 31 at 5:30 PM in the Aronson Galleries, 66 Fifth Avenue at 13th Street, NYC.

Directed Dialogues will present work selected from the New School University Art Collection and a selection of the works from the studios of the participating M.F.A. students. A video diary of the installation, gallery talks with the curators, and documentary material, will provide access to the process of creating and curating the exhibition, and opportunities for discussion amongst the curators and viewers.

Through an intensive 14-week process, the 27 curators engaged in an investigation of the making and concurrent creation of an exhibition. Selecting the theme of dialogue—the necessary and at the same time theoretical aim of the process—they discussed goals of exhibition making, strategies for presentation, selection and refinement of themes, and eventually the selection of the artworks to be exhibited. This highly self-conscious process is both the subject of and material for the exhibition.

Parsons M.F.A. students who will be participating in the show include: Coralia Nitu, Hyun-Jin Kwon, Andrea DeFlorio, Meredith Pardue, Ryan Bartley, Berna Can, Brad Hampton, Andy Grooms, Eonju Kim, Hye-Kyung Kim, James Terrell, Deborah Luken, Jennifer Chapek, Faith Evans, Scott Davidson, Jessie Nickerson, Daniel Patterson, Kelly Reynolds, Mary Vaccaro, Joe Pfeifer, Vlatka Horvat, Matthew Burns, Justin Burns, Jeff Feld, Scarlett Hooft-Graafland, and John Shahoney.

This exhibition marks the first educational collaboration between the students of Parsons School of Design and the New School University Art Collection.

New School University’s Art Collection contains over 1,500 pieces of artwork that significantly reflect the most current developments in contemporary art and encourage a dialogue about wider societal issues. Much of the work explores the relationship of art to society, expands definitions of art, and reflects the University’s commitment to freedom of expression. Physically, the Collection is spread throughout New School University’s administrative and classroom buildings. Eschewing the self-consciousness of a gallery and the sterility of exhibition space, the University ensures that its students and staff experience the artwork on an intimate and daily basis by hanging it in lobbies and cafeterias, hallways and offices, dormitories and meeting rooms. It is a "revolving" collection, funding new purchases through the sale of older pieces. This active, evolving approach ensures that the work on display truly reflects the contemporary art scene and conveys timely social commentary as a stimulus for relevant debate. The Collection also mirrors the diversity and international character of New School University’s community, as well as the atmosphere of inclusion that flourishes within. The Web site is located at: www.dialnsa.edu/gallery/home.html.

New School University, with 7,000 matriculated students and 25,000 continuing education students, is comprised of seven academic divisions: The New School, the Graduate Faculty of Political and Social Science, Parsons School of Design, Eugene Lang College, Mannes College of Music, the Robert J. Milano Graduate School of Management and Urban Policy, and the Actors Studio Drama School, as well as the University's B.F.A. in Jazz and Contemporary Music. New School Online University offers one of the largest selections of online courses in the nation.
