NEW SCHOOL UNIVERSITY'S GRADUATE FACULTY
RECEIVES $300,000 GRANT FROM CARNEGIE CORPORATION
FOR JOURNAL DONATION PROJECT

Grant to go towards the Journal Donation Project to assist in
rebuilding 65 libraries in Russia and the former Soviet Union

(New York, NY – July 10, 2002) New School University's Graduate Faculty of Political and Social Science has received a major grant of $300,000 from the Carnegie Corporation for its Journal Donation Project (JDP). The grant will go towards the continuation of the JDP's work in 65 libraries in Russia and the former Soviet Union. Particular attention will be paid to eight newly established Russian Centers for Advanced Study and Education (CASE), which, through the support of the Carnegie Corporation are set to become Russia's premier universities. Arien Mack, Alfred J. and Monette Marrow Professor of Psychology at New School University's Graduate Faculty, and editor of the journal, "Social Research," is Director of the Journal Donation Project (JDP).

The project, which was founded in 1990 by Professor Mack, assists in rebuilding major research and teaching libraries throughout the countries of the former Soviet Union through the provision of current subscriptions and back volume sets to English-language scholarly, professional and current events journals. In the last few years the JDP has also begun assisting research libraries in Nigeria and Iran. The Journal Donation Project was created as a transitional form of assistance for the libraries in its network, as they struggle within precarious economies on their road to independence. The journals provided are concentrated in the social sciences, humanities, law, public policy, business, education and medicine.

As an outgrowth of the connection between Social Research and scholars in East and Central Europe, in 1990 Social Research began The East and Central Europe Journal Donation Project (JDP). Other journals were asked to join in donating fifteen subscriptions for distribution to academic and research libraries in the region. The JDP now provides subscriptions to 900 journals in approximately 250 libraries in 21 countries throughout East and Central Europe and Central Asia.
