LA GUARDIA PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIPS AND
JOHN L. TISHMAN SCHOLARSHIP

FULL TUITION SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED TO TOP NYC STUDENTS
ATTENDING THE UNIVERSITY'S EUGENE LANG COLLEGE

(New York, NY – June 18, 2002) New School University announced the recipients of the first La Guardia Presidential Scholarships, which enables outstanding students from the five boroughs of New York City to attend the University's undergraduate liberal arts college, Eugene Lang College, on full tuition scholarships.

The La Guardia Presidential Scholarships program was announced earlier this year by New School University President Bob Kerrey at the University's major fundraiser, the 2002 Fiorello H. La Guardia Award Dinner, on January 30, 2002. In announcing the new program, President Kerrey said, "These scholarships will enable five outstanding students to get the best education that a New York City institution can offer. And it is our hope that the La Guardia Presidential Scholars will use their New School University experience to give something back to our great city and personally contribute to its progress."

In addition to the full tuition scholarship, each recipient of the La Guardia Presidential Scholarship will participate in a Presidential Seminar and in the Dean's Forum, a group that meets with the Dean to discuss significant issues. Scholars will also serve as Eugene Lang College Ambassadors and will be called upon to represent Eugene Lang College in recruitment, at high school workshops, and with other projects.

The first recipients of the La Guardia Presidential Scholarships are Irene Cifra from St. Joseph's Hill Academy in Staten Island, NY; Marisa Day from Curtis High School in Staten Island, NY; Minna Krauss from the Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn, NY; Saadia Khalid from Bronx High School; and Laura Secher, also from Curtis High School in Staten Island, NY.

The University also announced the recipient of the John L. Tishman Scholarship, created by the University in recognition of the chairman of its Board of Trustees, who is stepping down after seven years of outstanding leadership on the Board. He will continue to serve as a New School Trustee and as chair of Eugene Lang College's Board of Governors. Mr. Tishman is chairman and CEO of Tishman Realty & Construction, Inc.

The John L. Tishman Scholarship, a full tuition scholarship, is awarded to one outstanding Eugene Lang College student in recognition of high scholastic achievement and evidence of commitment to public service and community involvement. The purpose of the scholarship is to give a deserving student the opportunity and means to develop into a thinker and shaper of our city and nation, much in the tradition of its namesake.

The first recipient of the John L. Tishman Scholarship is Celine Valensi from the New York City Museum School.
