"It's a fascinating story," says Mueller, who has been with the program since the spring of 1987 and became its Executive Director in 1999. Mueller has assembled a faculty featuring top jazz artists including: Joanne Brackeen, Andrew Cyrille, Jane Ira Bloom, Cecil McBee, Kenny Werner, Buster Williams, Jimmy Owens, Chico Hamilton, among others. Alumni of the program include many of today's up-and-coming jazz artists, among them: Brad Mehldau, Roy Hargrove, Peter Bernstein, Larry Goldings, Miri Ben-Ari, John Popper, Jesse Davis, Virginia Mayhew, Shedrick Mitchell and Walter Blanding, Jr.

The school has grown from 30 full-time students to more than 250 students today, drawing approximately 25% of its students from foreign countries. Students in the program have many opportunities to perform at the school, as well as at venues around New York City. The school is located in the heart of the jazz community in Greenwich Village.
