LOUIS MENAND, VISITING PROFESSOR AT NEW SCHOOL UNIVERSITY'S
GRADUATE FACULTY, RECEIVES PULITZER PRIZE IN HISTORY
(New York, NY April 9, 2002) New School University
and its Graduate Faculty of Political and Social Science announced
today that Louis Menand, Visiting Professor of Liberal Studies, is
the recipient of the 86th Annual Pulitzer Prize in History (in the category
of Letters, Drama and Music) for his book, The Metaphysical Club: A Story
of Ideas in America (Farrar, Straus and Giroux). The book is a biographical
study of American pragmatism.
Louis Menand joined New School University's Graduate Faculty
in fall 2001 as Visiting Professor of Liberal Studies. He teaches "The
Post-Modern Turn," an interdisciplinary look at the origins in art and
thought of developments associated with American postmodernism. Mr. Menand
is also a Professor of English at the City University of New York Graduate
Center. He is a contributing editor to The New Yorker, and a frequent
contributor to The New York Review of Books, where he has written about
politics and popular culture, as well as commenting on the culture wars and
reviewing new works of fiction.
Mr. Menand is currently at work on a new book about American culture during the Cold War. He holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University.
