DAVID HAYES TO CONDUCT THE MANNES ORCHESTRA
ON THURSDAY, APRIL 4, 2002 AT 8 PM
PROGRAM AT THE JOHN JAY COLLEGE THEATER TO INCLUDE WORKS
BY RACHMANINOFF, BARTOK AND PAKHMUTOVA
(New York, NY February 26, 2002) David Hayes will conduct The
Mannes Orchestra in a concert on Thursday, April 4, 2002 at the John Jay
College Theater. The program will feature Rachmaninoffs "Toteninsel"
(Isle of the Dead), Op. 29, conducted by graduating Master's conducting candidate,
Stephen Czarkowski, Pakhmutovas "Concerto for Trumpet and
Orchestra" featuring Antonio Marti, trumpet and winner of this year's
Wind/Brass Concerto Competition, and Bartoks "Concerto for Orchestra."
The John Jay College Theater is located at 899 10th Avenue, between 58th and

The next concert in The Mannes Orchestra series will take place on Monday,
May 6, 2002 at the Miller Theater at Columbia University.
Student conductor Stephen Czarkowski will graduate from the Mannes College
of Music this spring with Masters degrees in both cello and conducting.
He is in the conducting class of David Hayes and studies cello Barbara Stein
Mallow. Mr. Czarkowski received his Bachelor of Music degree in cello performance
in 1999 from the Mannes College of Music, studying with Carter Brey. This coming
spring, he has been invited to conduct the Newmann College Choir in John Rutters
Requiem. Mr. Czarkowski has participated in Master Classes with Samuel
Wong, Miguel Harth-Bedoya and Jorma Panula.
Trumpet soloist Antonio Marti attended the music school, La Artistica
Manisense in Valencia, Spain at the age of ten. A year later he moved to Tenerife,
where he began to study trumpet with Francisco Ramos. Antonio was then accepted
into the Superior Conservatory of Tenerife, where he continued his studies with
Agustin Ramos. Mr. Martis professional engagements include appearances
with Orquesta Clasica del la Laguna, Orquesta Sinfonica de Tenerife, the Pacific
Music Festival Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. Antonio Marti currently
studies with Vincent Penzarella at Mannes College of Music, where he is a junior
in the Bachelor of Music program.
Conductor David Hayes is the Associate Music Director of the Mannes Orchestra. He also serves as head of the Orchestral Conducting Program at Mannes College and is Staff Conductor of The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Mr. Hayes has also served as Assistant Conductor of the Opera Company of Philadelphia and of The Philadelphia Singers from 1989-1992. In addition, he served as Cover Conductor of the New York Philharmonic and the Curtis Symphony Orchestra's European tour with Sir Andre Previn in the Fall of 1999.
