ORION STRING QUARTET TO PERFORM AT
MANNES COLLEGE OF MUSIC ON FRIDAY, MARCH 29 AT 8 PM

(New York, NY - February 20, 2002) Mannes College of Music’s Quartet-in-Residence, the Orion String Quartet, will present a concert on Friday, March 29, 2002 at the Mannes Concert Hall. The program will feature Beethoven’s Op. 18, No.5, Danish composer Per Nørgård’s "Into the Source" String Quartet No. 9, and Ravel’s String Quartet in F Major. Per Nørgård’s work was co-commissioned by the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival for the Orion String Quartet and was premiered in Santa Fe in August 2001. Hailed for its exquisite artistry, technical mastery and astute approach to concert programming, the Orion String Quartet is one of the most admired chamber ensembles on the international music scene. For further information on this free event, call Mannes at 212/496-8524. Mannes College of Music, a division of New School University, is located at 150 West 85th Street (between Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues) in NYC. (Take the #1 subway to 85th Street.)

The members of the Quartet - violinists Daniel Phillips and Todd Phillips, violist Steven Tenenbom and cellist Timothy Eddy - have worked with such legendary figures as Pablo Casals, Rudolph Serkin, Isaac Stern, Pinchas Zukerman, Yo-Yo Ma, Wynton Marsalis, as well as the Budapest, Vegh, Galimir, and Guarneri String Quartets. Now in its second decade of exceptional music making, the Orion continues to perform in the world's leading concert halls and serves as Quartet-in-Residence at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and at Mannes College of Music.

For the 2001-2002 season, the Orion joins forces with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company and members of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center for a unique collaboration. This project will be presented in New York, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, Iowa City, Princeton, Amherst, Greendale, NY, Ithaca, NY, and Orono, ME. In addition to appearances with Bill T. Jones, the Orion String Quartet performs in Boston, Philadelphia, and Santa Fe. Known for its Beethoven interpretations, the Quartet also performs the complete Beethoven String Quartets in a special concert series at the Folly Theater in Kansas City, as well as all-Beethoven programs in Pittsburgh and San Juan, Puerto Rico, and at Mannes College of Music.

The Orion String Quartet, heard frequently on National Public Radio's Performance Today and WNYC's Live, has appeared three times on ABC-TV's Good Morning America and on A&E's Breakfast with the Arts. The Quartet chose its name from the Orion constellation as a metaphor for the unique personality each musician brings to the group in its collective pursuit of the highest musical ideals.
