PARSONS SCHOOL OF DESIGN PRESENTS
EXHIBITION: "FEVER LINES: 20 YEARS OF INX"
DECEMBER 5, 2001 JANUARY 11, 2002
(New York, NY November 12, 2001) Parsons School of Design,
a division of New School University presents "Fever Lines: 20 Years
of INX," an exhibition of black and white editorial page drawings stretching
from the Age of Reagan to todays War on Terrorism. The exhibition will
run from December 5 through January 11 at the Main Gallery of Parsons School
of Design in New York City. The show offers highly opinionated perspectives
on world affairs by nearly 50 widely published illustrators in a variety of
styles and techniques. For more information about this exhibition call 212-229-8987
A group of New York-based editorial artists joined together in
1980 to form INX with the intention of self-syndicating uncensored political
images to the news market. Spurred by a passion for ideas and picture making
and bolstered by their camaraderie, the group began producing a selection of
four weekly images covering the hottest topics of the day. In 1983, an agreement
with United Feature Syndicate to distribute the service freed the group to focus
solely on content and opened the way for a widening circle of contributors.
Subscribers to the service have included The Boston Globe, The Philadelphia
Inquirer, The Seattle Times, The Washington Post and numerous publications
in the U.S. and abroad.
At the beginning of each week, four or more artists are commissioned
by a member art director to contribute pieces based on current events. By midweek
they deliver their artwork to United Features midtown Manhattan offices
to be syndicated electronically and in print. On a good day they continue on
to a brunch of brainstorming and gossip. In this loose-limbed fashion, INX has
generated a body of work composed of over 4000 editorial images, a powerful
graphic chronicle of the last two decades.
From broad caricature to somber surrealism, from ink to paint
to collage to computer, this work represents a wide range of moods and media.
The show features the international perspectives of artists including Horacio
Cardo, Felipe Galindo, Janusz Kapusta and Igor Kopelnitsky as well as the homegrown
viewpoints of Yvonne Buchanan, Randy Jones, Thomas Kerr, David Klein and Martin
Kozlowski and Peter Kuper, the groups art directors. The show serves as
an illustrated history lesson full of biting humor, surprising insight, startling
images and extraordinary craft.
"Its wonderful that the INX cartoon collection has so many different artistic styles and viewpoints," says Amy Lago, Vice President of Comics and Graphics for United Feature Syndicate. "The best illustrators around come together to bring us their take on social and political events--and the result is relevant, expert artwork."
