SAMUEL WONG TO LEAD THE MANNES ORCHESTRA
ON THURSDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2001 AT 8 PM

2001 MANNES VIOLIN CONCERTO COMPETITION
WINNER, DAN ZHU, TO PERFORM

(New York, NY –November 7, 2001) The Mannes Orchestra will present a concert on Thursday, December 13, 2001 at 8 PM at the John Jay College Theater. The program will include Mahler’s Fifth Symphony in C# Minor (1901-2, rev. 1904-1910) and the Mendelssohn Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in E Minor, Op. 64, with violinist Dan Zhu, winner of this year's violin concerto competition. The John Jay College Theater is located at 899 10th Avenue, between 58th and 59th Streets. No tickets are required for this free performance. Conductor Samuel Wong was appointed Music Director of The Mannes Orchestra in 1999. This season, in addition to his work with Mannes, Maestro Wong will return to the Toronto Symphony, the Orchestra of Castilla y Leon in Spain and the Honolulu Symphony. He will make his debut with the Orchestras in Milan, Italy and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Violinist Dan Zhu was born in 1982 in Beijing, China. Mr. Zhu began studying the violin at the age of four, and at the age of nine he made his first concerto appearance performing the Mozart Violin Concerto No. 4 with the China Youth Chamber Orchestra. Zhu was the recipient of several awards in China, including a concerto performance with the National Symphony Orchestra of China, as well as solo engagements in Japan and Canada. Since moving to the United States, Mr. Zhu won first prizes at the 2000 Bergen Philharmonic competition, the 25th Waldo Mayo Memorial Violin Competition and the 2001 Mannes Concerto Competition, as well as a special presentation award at the 2000 Johansen International competition for Strings. In May, 2001, he performed the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the New York Senior Orchestra in Carnegie Hall. Currently, Mr. Zhu attends Mannes College of Music in New York City as a full scholarship student, where he studies with Lucie Robert.
