SCHUMANN SYMPOSIUM AND PERFORMANCE
– SATURDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2001

EVENT PART OF YEAR-LONG FESTIVAL, THE SCHUMANNS AND THEIR CIRCLE\

(New York, NY - September 10, 2001) On Saturday, October 27, 2001, Mannes College of Music, a division of New School University, will be holding a Schumann symposium and evening performance as part of a year-long festival on The Schumanns and Their Circle. The Symposium at 2PM at the Liederkrantz Foundation (6. E. 87th Street, NYC) will be followed by an evening performance at 8PM at the Goethe-Institute (1014 Fifth Avenue, NYC). Seating is limited. The Schumanns and their Circle runs from September through December 2001, culminating with a concert at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall on Wednesday, December 19 at 8 PM. Last season's festival attracted enthusiastic capacity crowds at some of the city's most beautiful venues, including the National Arts Club, the Metropolitan Club, and the German Consulate. Organized by Artistic Director and Mannes’s Piano Department Chair, Pavlina Dokovska, the festival concerts feature the works of Robert and Clara Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn, Frederic Chopin and Franz Schubert. Soloists and chamber groups are made up of Mannes students and special guests.

The presenters for the Symposium will be Nancy B. Reich, L. Poundie Burstein, John Daverio, Rufus Hallmark and Joel Lester, Dean of Mannes College of Music. The talks will address the following topics:

  • "Her Ways, Their Ways: the Female Personae in Clara Schumann's Lieder." Dr. L. Poundie Burstein, Hunter College and CUNY Graduate School; Mannes College of Music
  • "A Second Look at Clara Schumann, the Artist and the Woman" - Dr. Nancy B. Reich.
  • "Fact and Fiction in Schumann Biography" - Dr. John Daverio, Boston University School of Music.
  • "Playing the Score: Performance Styles for Robert Schumann’s Music" - Dr. Joel Lester, Mannes College of Music.
  • "Schumann and the Other Frauenliebe Songs" - Dr. Rufus Hallmark, Queens College and CUNY Graduate School.
