BOB KERREY, PRESIDENT OF NEW SCHOOL UNIVERSITY, WELCOMES
FRESHMEN TO THE BIG APPLE ON THURSDAY, AUGUST 23, 2001
NEW SCHOOL UNIVERSITY OPENS NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART DORM AT 84 WILLIAM STREET
(August 23, 2001 - New York, NY) - Signaling the beginning of
the academic year, New School University President and former Senator, Bob Kerrey,
plans to welcome incoming freshmen and their parents at two University facilities
on Thursday, August 23, 2001. He will be at the new William Street dorm (84
William Street) at 11AM followed by a visit to Loeb Hall (135 E. 12th Street)
at 12:30PM.
"This is a real banner day for New School University,"
said President Bob Kerrey. "I'm excited to offer our students a chance
to participate in the life of the University and this great city through this
first-class residential facility. It's great to be here to welcome the students
back to school."
For the first time, New School University is housing all new undergraduates
who have requested a residential facility. The University, often cited for its
continuing education offerings and for its graduate degree programs, has recently
experienced rapid growth in its undergraduate programs including Parsons School
of Design, Mannes College of Music, Eugene Lang College (liberal arts school)
and The New School. In the past six years, on campus housing accommodations
have increased from 500 beds to over 1,100.
84 William Street will open for occupancy in time for the start of the fall 2001 semester. It will be home to 462 New School University continuing undergraduate and graduate students. Each apartment is equipped with telephone and Internet access and cable TV. The building is just a few blocks from Wall Street, South Street Seaport, Battery Park and other historic landmarks. William Street is ten minutes from New School University via the #4, #5, #1 or #2 subway.
