CLAUDE FRANK TO PRESENT
MASTER CLASS AT MANNES COLLEGE OF MUSIC
ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2001 AT 3 PM

(New York, NY- August 24, 2001) Pianist Claude Frank will present a master class at Mannes College of Music, a division of New School University, on Friday, October 19, 2001 at 3 PM. Claude Frank has appeared with the world’s foremost orchestras, at major festivals, and at universities since his debut in 1959. In May 2001, he celebrated the 50th anniversary of his New York debut at Town Hall with a recital at the 92nd Street Y featuring the works by Bach, Schubert, Mozart and Beethoven. The master class is open to the public. Mannes College of Music is located at 150 West 85th Street between Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues. (Take the #1/9 train to 85th Street.) For further information, call 212/496-8524.

Claude Frank is an internationally acclaimed interpreter of the piano literature of Beethoven. His 1990 re-release of a CD recording of the 32 piano sonatas by Beethoven on the Music and Arts label was chosen by the American Record Guide as "the one that reaches an exceptionally high level…and maintains that level with quite amazing consistency."

Mr. Frank has performed joint recitals with his daughter, violinist Pamela Frank, and has appeared with his wife, pianist Lilian Kallir. He has been a repeated soloist with the leading orchestras around the globe including the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestras, among others. In chamber music, he has appeared with many of the eminent quartets, among them the Guarneri, Juilliard, Cleveland, and Toyko Quartets. His festival appearances include Menuhin’s Gstaad Festival, the Midsummer Mozart Festival in California, the Marlboro Festival, and the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center.

A renowned teacher, as well as performer, Claude Frank is on the faculty of the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. He is a professor at Yale School of Music.

Claude Frank lived in Nuremberg until the age of 12, when he joined his father in Brussels. Shortly thereafter, he went to live in Paris, where he studied in the Paris Conservatoire.

The German occupation forced Mr. Frank to leave Paris. While in Spain illegally, he was overhead at the keyboard and invited to perform at a party given by the Brazilian Ambassador. There he won his first "fee" – a visa to come to the United States granted by the American Consul, who was in attendance at the party.

He continued his studies in New York City with Artur Schnabel and Karl Ulrich Schnabel and studied composition and conducting at Columbia University. At Tanglewood, he studied with conductor Serge Koussevitzky. He resides in New York City.
