INTERNATIONAL CENTER FOR MIGRATION, ETHNICITY AND CITIZENSHIP (ICMEC) AT NEW SCHOOL UNIVERSITY’S GRADUATE FACULTY OF POLITICAL AND SOCIAL SCIENCE AWARDED GRANT FROM THE GERMAN MARSHALL FUND OF THE UNITED STATES

(New York, NY – June 26, 2001) The International Center for Migration, Ethnicity and Citizenship (ICMEC) at the Graduate Faculty of Political and Social Science at New School University was recently awarded a $125,000 grant from the German Marshall Fund of the United States. The grant is to begin in the fall and will fund an ICMEC project fostering transatlantic dialogue on integration policies and practices in select European cities, as well as the United States.

The project will examine relevant activities that take place on a community level to accommodate immigrants. Specific "success stories" will be selected for inclusion into a "best practices" manual to be translated into appropriate languages for sharing and dissemination back to the communities.

The German Marshall Fund of the United States is an American institution that stimulates the exchange of ideas and promotes cooperation between the United States and Europe in the spirit of the postwar Marshall Plan. GMF was created in 1972 by a gift from the German people as a permanent memorial to Marshall Plan aid. The German gift created an American foundation intended to work not only in Germany, but also in all of Europe.

The International Center for Migration, Ethnicity and Citizenship (ICMEC) is a collaborative undertaking involving scholars and researchers from New School University and other New York area universities (including Columbia University, New York University, City University of New York, and Fordham University), which engages in scholarly research, public policy analysis, and graduate education bearing on international migration, refugees, and the incorporation of newcomers in host societies. A chief aim is to investigate the causes of large international migrations, refugee flows, patterns of demographic change in receiving countries, and the implications of these phenomena for contemporary notions of sovereignty and citizenship. For more information on the ICMEC, visit the center’s web site at www.newschool.edu/icmec/.
