JOFFREY/NEW SCHOOL UNIVERSITY DANCE PROGRAM TO COLLABORATE IN FIRST PROGRAM WITH NEW SCHOOL JAZZ PROGRAM ON TUESDAY, DECEMBER 12 AT 6 PM

(New York, NY — November 27, 2000) For the first time, dancers in the Joffrey/New School University B.F.A. program in dance will collaborate with composers from the New School Jazz B.F.A. program on Tuesday, December 12 at 6 PM as part of a new Interdisciplinary Program at the University.

The performance, which is free and open to the public, will take place at New School University’s Tishman Auditorium, 66 West 12th Street, NYC (F train or #1/9 to 14th Street). For further information, call the Joffrey/New School University Program at (212) 505-0585.

The performance will include ten new compositions by New School Jazz Program students: Lucian Ban, Jon Goldberg, Karl Kappler, Michael Levey, Shoichi Manabe, and Gabino Reyes.

These contemporary works will be choreographed by Joffrey/New School University students: Marcela Alvarez, David Barbour, Robin Cahn, Anne Chiaverini, Anna Kreager, Nicole Nastos, Thomas Nichols, Kristin Vaillancourt, Adrienne Vogt, and Keelan Whitmore.

Directors of the Interdisciplinary Program include Kathryn Posin, former chair and instructor in the Joffrey/New School program and Bill Kirchner, faculty member of the New School Jazz Program, saxophonist, composer, jazz historian, and producer. Mr. Kirchner is also editor of the newly released Oxford Companion to Jazz (Published 2000 by Oxford University Press).

The Joffrey/New School University B.F.A. program incorporates professional classical ballet training and standards of the Joffrey Ballet School with interdisciplinary courses at New School University. Both institutions are located in NYC’s Greenwich Village. Rebecca Wright is chair of the program.

New School University’s Jazz and Contemporary Music Program offers a B.F.A. degree program in Jazz Performance, and in Composing and Arranging. The faculty includes such renowned artists as Reggie Workman, Chico Hamilton, Buster Williams, Jimmy Owens, Benny Powell, Joanne Brackeen, and Jane Ira Bloom. Alumni of the program include many of today’s up-and-coming jazz artists — Larry Goldings, Brad Mehldau, Roy Hargrove, Peter Bernstein, Virginia Mayhew, among others. Martin Mueller is the Executive Director of the Jazz Program.
