TO OPEN 5th ANNUAL REPERTORY SEASON
ON WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 31, 2001

The Actors Studio Drama School will open its 5th Annual Repertory Season on Wednesday, January 31, 2001 at The Actors Studio Drama School Theatre, 159 Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village, between Sullivan and Thompson Streets. This year’s class includes 56 actors, 10 playwrights, and 6 directors who will present their theses during the Repertory Season. The productions will include original works written by the School’s playwrights, as well as works drawn from the classic and contemporary repertory.

The Repertory Season will run continuously for 14 weeks through Saturday, May 12, 2001. (There will be no performances March 21-24, due to the University’s Spring Break.) Five performances take place each week, Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8 PM, with Saturday matinees at 3 PM. Each program includes three thesis productions.

Admission to the Repertory Season performances is free, but reservations must be made in advance by phone or e-mail. Reservations will be taken starting Monday, January 8. The 24-hour reservation line is: (212) 479-1778, and the e-mail address is: theatre@newschool.edu. For further information on the Actors Studio Drama School, call (212) 229-5859.

The Actors Studio Drama School is an academic division of New School University. The partnership of the New School and the Actors Studio, both institutions with long traditions of innovation in education and the arts, began in 1993 with the formation of the Actors Studio M.F.A. Program. The Program is a comprehensive, three-year M.F.A. program in acting, directing and playwriting. The Program is designed and taught by professional actors, writers, and directors to produce professional actors, writers and directors ready to go to work in theater, film and television. The curriculum includes course work in Acting, Playwriting, Directing, Scenic, Lighting and Costume Design, Voice and Speech, Movement, Theater History and the Actors Studio Craft Seminars.

The Repertory Season represents the culmination of a three-year program of intensive study in each of the disciplines represented. The productions are all directed and acted – and many written -- by graduating students in their introduction to the public and the professional community.

James Lipton is Dean of the Actors Studio Drama School. Mr. Lipton also conducts the Actors Studio Craft Seminar Series, which is taped at the New School. The show airs later as "Inside the Actors Studio" on the Bravo channel on cable television.
