NEW YORK, March 16, 2009 – This month, the BFA Illustration program at Parsons The New School for Design will participate in two prestigious industry events, Pictoplasma Pictopia in Berlin (March 19-21) and the Bologna Book Fair (March 23-29). In timing with Pictopia, the 3rd Pictoplasma Conference, Parsons will present "Ugly is Beautiful: Character Design at Parsons" at the Collegium Hungaricum Berlin. The exhibition will feature a selection of current student work alongside student work by some of Parsons noted alumni. A majority of the work was created in a Toy Concept course led by faculty member Caty Bartholomew. Parsons Illustration program focuses on visual storytelling and offers classes in character and toy design. Graduates of the program include A.J. Fossik, Aaron Stewart and Motomichi Nakamura, whose work is represented at Pictopia, as well as David Horvath (creator of Ugly Dolls with Sun Min Kim) and Peter de Seve. At the Bologna Children's Book Fair, Parsons Illustration will partner with the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW), the University of the Arts in Kyoto, the Università di Bologna, and ENSAD Paris to present student work. This includes a joint booth at the fair in addition to a special exhibition at the Maison Francaise of Bologna. The exhibition will feature haikus illustrated by students in all of the participating programs.
