A Conference on the Forces that Constrain Development in Sub-Saharan Africa

Keynote Speech by Thandika Mkandawire,

WHAT:

The Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis and Project Africa will present a one-day conference at The New School for Social Research on May 2nd on economic development in Sub-Saharan Africa. The conference will explore the connections among intersecting domestic, global, economic, and political forces that constrain economic development in sub-Saharan Africa. The conference kicks off with a keynote speech by Thandika Mkandawire, director of the UN Research Institute for Social Development, titled “From Maladjusted States to Developmental States.” Two panels of international experts will follow to discuss the economic and political challenges facing sub-Saharan African countries today.
