Empowerhouse: 2011 Solar Decathlon
Parsons School of Design was one of 20 teams of colleges and universities selected to compete in the 2011 Solar Decathlon. The Empowerhouse team — Parsons; the Milano School of International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy; and Stevens Institute of Technology — transformed the competition into an unprecedented interdisciplinary effort to address the issue of affordable and sustainable urban housing.
Empowerhouse brought together more than 100 students representing a range of design disciplines—communication design and technology, architecture, sustainable design, interior design, fashion design, and product design—as well as urban policy, management, and engineering. In keeping with Parsons' focus on the real-world impact of design, the Empowerhouse team partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Washington, D.C., and the DC Department of Housing and Community Development to develop housing for the local DC community of Deanwood.
