Public Art Fund Talks at The New School: Fred Wilson

The Public Art Fund presents a talk by distinguished American artist Fred Wilson. Wilson’s work investigates how institutions and systems of display shape interpretations of historical truth and cultural value. His work recontextualizes icons and artifacts to expose cultural institutions’ Eurocentric bias. Many of his projects involve extensive community outreach and research in the cities where they are shown.

Wilson will discuss the Central Indiana Community Foundation’s recent cancellation of a commission it had given him for a public sculpture. The project was canceled following several years of debate between local government and community groups and numerous presentations by Wilson himself. Wilson will place this experience within the broader context of public art and the aims of his artistic practice.

Fred Wilson was born in the Bronx in 1954 and continues to live and work in New York City. He has been featured in solo exhibitions at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum (2005), Studio Museum in Harlem (2004), M. H. de Young Memorial Museum (1999), Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (1994), Seattle Art Museum (1993), Contemporary and Maryland Historical Society (1992), and White Columns (1990). He was also selected to represent the United States at the 1992 Cairo Biennale and the 2003 Venice Biennale. Wilson received a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Achievement Award in 1999 and a Larry Aldrich Foundation Award in 2003. He is also a Distinguished Visiting Fellow in Object, Exhibition, and Knowledge at Skidmore College. Fred Wilson is represented by the Pace Gallery in New York.

Public Art Fund Talks at The New School are organized by the Public Art Fund in collaboration with the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School.

Admission: $10; $15 series (2 talks); FREE to all students with valid ID and New School faculty, staff and alumni.  Tickets may be purchased on the day of each talk but we strongly recommend purchasing in advance. The last Talk takes place on April 11.

Single event purchases can be made online at any time at the New School Box Office. Series and discounted tickets must still be made in person or over the phone at The New School Box Office at 66 West 12th Street, main floor, Monday-Thursday 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., and Friday 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. The box office opens the first day of classes and closes after the last paid event of each semester. For events scheduled during the summer term, the box office will open one hour before each event.
