AMT Visiting Artist Lecture Series: Doug Ashford

6:15 p.m.

The Visiting Artists Lecture Series is sponsored by the School of Art, Media, and Technology (AMT) at Parsons The New School for Design. Organized by Coco Fusco, director of Intermedia Initiatives at AMT, the series invites renowned artists from around the world to give free public presentations each Wednesday.

Doug Ashford is an associate professor at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, where he has taught three-dimensional design, sculpture, public art, and theory seminars since 1989. Ashford’s principal visual practice from 1982 to 1996 was the artists’ collaborative Group Material, which produced more than 40 exhibitions and public projects around the world. Group Material developed the exhibition into an artistic medium and critical site where audiences were invited to imagine democratic forms. Since 1996, Ashford has continued to paint, write, and produce museum and public projects. Among his recent works is the book Who Cares (Creative Time, 2006), a publication developed from a series of conversations between Ashford and other cultural practitioners on public expression, beauty, and ethics.
