Works in Progress: The Arts and Social Engagement

12:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Louise Montello, associate professor and coordinator of Creative Arts Therapy at The New School for Public Engagement, discusses an experiment in building interdisciplinary, cross-divisional foundation courses on the arts and social engagement. She also explores plans for an arts and social engagement curriculum at The New School with Lily Ling, associate professor in the graduate program in International Affairs; Ashley Soutour, MA student in International Affairs; and Tim Stock, culture mapping expert and part-time faculty member at Parsons.

Participants in the two-year experiment developed ideas for courses in which the arts were employed to address social, political, and cultural issues. Participants gained an understanding of ways the arts can be used to effect social change and build relationships with community organizations, both locally and around the world.
