The New York Metro American Studies Association has chosen the theme of “Memory” for its annual conference. What do we choose to remember? What do we choose to forget? Who is the “we” that is remembering or forgetting? How do public commemorations influence perceptions of the past? What is the relationship between history, memory, and heritage? What is the role of the public in shaping the commemorative process, especially when trauma is involved? How is history used, even invented, to justify particular actions? How do personal memory and public memory merge and diverge?
This conference is hosted and co-sponsored by Parsons’ School of Art and Design History and Theory.
