Design and Urban Practice Colloquium: Vila Viva Favela Redesign, Belo Horizonte, Brazil

Presented by the School of Design Strategies at Parsons The New School for Design, the Design and Urban Practice Colloquium is a public lecture series on alternative and innovative forms of design and urban practice.

The November 2 lecture is: “Vila Viva Favela Redesign, Belo Horizonte, Brazil.” Claudius Pereira, chief executive of the Agency for Housing and Urbanization for Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and Dr. Fernando Lara, architect and professor at the University of Texas, Austin, discuss the redesign of the Vila Viva Favela, winner of a Metropolis Award.

Future lectures:

November 16: “Designing the High Line from Behind the Scenes, New York City.” Robert Hammond, co-founder and executive director of Friends of the High Line, speaks about the project, winner of an AIA Urban Design Award and an ASLA Honor Award.

November 30: “Designing Radical Transformation with the Orangi Pilot Project, Karachi, Pakistan.” Arif Hasan, architect, planner, and consultant and chair of the Urban Resource Centre in Karachi, discusses the Orangi Pilot Project, winner of a World Habitat Award.
