Envisioning the Next Wave Parsons Presents Aftertaste: Moving In

On Friday, April 2, and Saturday, April 3, Parsons The New School for Design will present AFTERTASTE: Moving In, at the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center. This annual international symposium dedicated to the critical review of the interior was developed in conjunction with the new MFA program in Interior Design that Parsons launched in fall 2009.

This fourth annual event will explore the ideas, skills, and areas of specialist knowledge that are “moving in” to expand interior design practice and the challenges of creating more sustainable interiors. Dutch designer Claudy Jongstra, creator of innovative wool textiles for interiors will deliver the keynote. In addition, there will be case studies of interior spaces conceived by interior designers, architects, exhibition designers, artists, engineers, furniture manufacturers, fabricators, and clients.

Panelists include Margit Geist, workplace consultant, Vitra; Melanie Ide, project director; Susan Szenasy, editor-in-chief, Metropolis; and symposium organizers Christina Zeidler, film and video artist and president of the Gladstone Hotel, Toronto. AFTERTASTE is organized by Jonsara Ruth, director of the MFA Interior Design program, and Alfred Zollinger, assistant professor of Interior Design, at the School of Constructed Environments at Parsons, which encompasses programs in architecture, interior design, lighting design and product design. The new MFA in Interior Design is a groundbreaking program that addresses the challenges and opportunities of contemporary interior design in the 21st century, integrating history, theory, design, material experimentation, and sustainable practice.
