The Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library at Duke University has acquired the photographic archives of Vince Cianni, an adjunct faculty member in the Art, Media and Technology School at Parsons, to “ensure the preservation of the documentary record created” throughout Cianni’s career.
Cianni, a Brooklyn-based photographer, is highly acclaimed for his documentary work. His photographic eight-year study of urban Latino youth in New York City titled, We Skate Hardcore, is among the projects already acquired by Duke.
Cianni has exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts (Houston,TX), the Museum of the City of New York, the Center for Documentary Studies (Durham, NC), 7th Internationale Fototage (Mannheim, Germany), the George Eastman House (Rochester, NY) and the Griffin Museum (Winchester, MA).
In addition, Cianni's work is featured in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Polaroid Corporation; Brooklyn Museum of Art; Worcester Museum of Art (Worchester, MA); Museet fur Fotokunst (Denmark, Sweden); and Bibliotheque National de France, Paris.
The library at Duke will be collecting, archiving, and making available for study all negatives, contact sheets, printing notes, written comments, and prints of the documentary photography work Cianni will complete during his lifetime. The archive will also include darkroom equipment and written material pertinent to the photographs, including notebooks, journals, tape recordings, and correspondence.
